Solisia pectinata Cactus

Solisia pectinata is a rare and fascinating miniature cactus native to central Mexico. Although many modern botanical references classify this species as Mammillaria pectinifera, the historic name Solisia pectinata remains popular among collectors and cactus enthusiasts. Its remarkable comb-like spination and compact size make it one of the most distinctive and desirable miniature cacti in cultivation.

This slow-growing species develops a solitary, flattened to globular body covered in tightly packed tubercles rather than ribs. Each areole produces numerous fine white radial spines that lie flat against the surface of the plant, forming intricate comb-like patterns that almost completely conceal the green body beneath. This unique spination gives the cactus an elegant, lace-like appearance that stands out in any collection.

Native to limestone-rich habitats, Solisia pectinata has evolved to thrive in mineral soils with excellent drainage and seasonal rainfall. Its substantial taproot stores water efficiently, allowing the plant to survive extended dry periods while maintaining its compact form.

During spring, mature plants produce delicate pale pink to soft lavender flowers that emerge in a ring around the crown. The blooms provide a beautiful contrast against the brilliant white spines and are followed by slender fruits containing tiny black seeds.

Every Solisia pectinata offered is cultivated for ornamental and horticultural purposes. Each living specimen naturally varies in size, spine arrangement, wool development, and colour, making every cactus unique.
