Cold Hardy Prickly Pear Opuntia ‘Claude Arno’ Cactus

The Cold Hardy Prickly Pear Opuntia ‘Claude Arno‘ is a beautiful ornamental cactus selected for its strong growth, attractive paddle-shaped pads, and dependable cold hardiness. This unique cultivar is well suited for Canadian growers who want a resilient, low-maintenance cactus that adds year-round texture and seasonal colour to rock gardens, xeriscapes, patios, and container displays.

Like other hardy Opuntia varieties, ‘Claude Arno’ develops thick, flattened green pads that efficiently store water and produce new growth each season. As the plant matures, it gradually forms attractive clumps with a branching habit that creates a bold architectural statement in both landscapes and containers. Depending on the specimen, the pads may feature clusters of protective spines, fine glochids, or a combination of both.

Adapted to dry climates with seasonal temperature fluctuations, this hardy prickly pear thrives in full sun and well-drained soils. Once established, it is exceptionally drought tolerant and requires very little maintenance, making it an excellent choice for beginners and experienced cactus collectors alike.

During late spring and early summer, mature plants produce large, showy flowers, with bloom colour varying slightly depending on the clone and growing conditions. The blossoms create a striking contrast against the rich green pads and are often followed by decorative fruits that add ornamental value later in the season.

Every Cold Hardy Prickly Pear Opuntia ‘Claude Arno’ offered is responsibly nursery-grown for ornamental and horticultural purposes. Each plant is carefully selected for healthy roots, vigorous growth, and excellent quality. Because every cactus is a living specimen, natural variation in pad size, branching, spine density, flowering, and overall appearance makes each plant unique.
